A CHARMED LIFE, BRACELET NOMINATED AS HOT NEW TREND
Venus Williams sports them on the February 2003 cover of Tennis Magazine. Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Jennifer Lopez have wrapped themselves in them. The bejeweled stainless steel links have become an “it” item on every fashionista’s charming wish list.

By successfully transforming the old-fashioned, dangly bangle into a sleek, do-it-yourself fashion accessory, Nomination charm bracelet have become a “must-have” items for the fashion-conscious. With their stainless steel and gold links – embellished with gold enameled letters and bejeweled bits – these popular bracelets allow anyone to assemble a unique, one-of-a-kind item that defines their distinct personality and special interests. The story from vision to wrist is embodied in the life of its creator.

The origins of the Nomination bracelet cab be traced to the village of Sesto Fiorentino on the northwestern edge of Florence in the late 1970’s. There four Gensini brothers opened a small café to serve coffee, groceries and sundries to Sesto’s working-class neighbors and their children.

Within a short time, Paolo Gensini had become very famous for his ice cream creations, and the unique and finely detailed desserts lured his customers back to the café. Enterprising and creative, with a flare of building memorable parfaits, the ex-mechanical worker continually introduced new flavors and techniques to traditional and exotic recipes to satisfy his growing number of ice cream aficionados.

At the same time, Paolo and his brothers were developing their own recipe for running a successful business, from dealing with suppliers to transforming ideas into reality. In 1983, they turned their attention to jewelry and founded a new company, G4. Now Paolo would have an opportunity to combine his metal working skills and attention to detail with his passion for satisfying his customers’ diverse tastes. His profound interest in the craft of jewelry making – and in applying classic themes to fresh, contemporary designs – would also flourish.

Soon Paolo was applying his knowledge of metal fabrication and exploring new techniques for fabricating stainless-steel into jewelry and combining it with 18K gold and colored natural stones. He also drew creative inspirations from his ongoing fascination with popular Florentine jewelry design and contemporary styles – including still-popular stainless-steel watchbands. In 1987, Paolo asked himself, “Why not create a bracelet that you can customize any way you want, according to your own personal taste, just like an ice cream sundae?”

Answering his own question, Paolo designed a bracelet that allowed its owners to create a look as individual and unique as they are. He called his new creations Nomination, from the Latin term meaning “giving someone an appropriate name.”

It was Lottie Christiansen – the founder of Danish distribution company Lottie Firenze – who helped Paolo establish a foothold in the highly-competitive jewelry market. Lottie noticed the Nomination bracelets during a business trip to Florence and, after speaking with Paolo, she became the global distributor for the Nomination line. The Nomination name also became the name of the company itself and the brand name for all of its collections.

Today, with his son Antonio acting as CEO and his younger son Alessandro also on board, Paolo continues to play a very active role in the ongoing creations and designs in the Nomination line. In fact, he is a creative presence behind all of the company’s innovative products, including its new composable, ready-to-wear bracelets, the St. Tropez, Capri and Cubiamo lines in leather as well as necklaces, watches and accessories that are distributed through a network of high-end jewelry retailers. According to Marketing Director Marzia Marzi, the entire Nomination line is carefully crafted in Florence from the finest materials available. “These high-fashion Nomination pieces can be found in 30 countries, including the United States,” Marzi says.

The composable bracelet links are made of stainless steel, 18K gold, enamel, diamonds, precious and semi-precious stones or cubic zirconia, and are personalized link by link, enabling the owner to take a scoop of blue lapis and double scoop of mother of pearl or green agate to continually change each link based on his or her own life story. “You can spell your name or USA, add a yellow ribbon or the rainbow flag for peace,” Marzi explains. “When you get married, you can add a heart, continually creating and adding to it.”

There is also a vast collection of sports and Zodiac symbols, as well as an entire color palette of other rich flavors, including black onyx, red and pink coral, gray pearl, malachite and turquoise.

Are in you in the mood to try something completely different? Reveal a sizzling new secret, introduce your new baby or new spouse’s name, announce a significant event or create something entirely kitschy and fascinating. No matter what your message, the Nomination composable link bracelet helps you to serve it up in a memorable way.

“Nomination is a brand that appeals to everyone, across all ages, genders, races, ethnicities and religions,” Marzi says. “Go to Europe, and the biggest names in soccer are all wearing Nomination. This is not only a woman’s line.”

What’s the latest hip accessory for the junior-high set? Not a cell phone or a portable MP3 player but, believe it or not, a charm bracelet.

These aren’t your grandmother’s charm bracelets, though. Known as Nomination bracelets, after the Italian maker, they are made of stretchy stainless-steel links and have charms straight out of TV’s “Sex and the City”: dollar signs, martini glasses and cell phones. (Plain, connecting, links are around $6; the charms range from $17 to $150 each.) Among the top sellers last month? Opal hearts, ladybugs, and gold peace signs. The company’s even pushing charms for tots, with enameled animals and gold pacifiers.

Nomination says sales have tripled since it introduced the bracelets in the U.S. in 1998. And, as with any craze, certain charms have become cult items. J.S. Marten Jewelry in Carmel, Ind. says it sells nearly 75 angels a day (they are often sold out) while Modern Eve Sonoma in Sonoma, Calif., has started waiting lists for the red lips and the zircon crosses. “people drive miles,” says Modern Eve owner Alexis Gray. “They’re crazed for them.” And forget passing off a knockoff on your wrist – the cognoscenti know to look for the Nomination stamp on the back.

The appeal, says fans, is that you can put together a portrait in stamped metal, a kind of wearable rebus. “They show who and what kind of person you are,” says Courtney Bolin, 15 years old, whose bracelet sports sneakers (she runs track), her initials, and her zodiac sign, Pisces. She’s planning to start a second one that’ll have her initials again, but this time in diamonds.

Of course, this isn’t the first time charm bracelets have been in style. Their popularity peaked in the late 1940s and 1950s, after soldiers from World War II came home with charms from the different cities they’ passed through. But the old-fashioned dangly kind jingle at the slightest movement. Nomination fans say their bracelets are quieter and sleeker, and they probably also got a boost from Sarah Jessica Parker’s taste wearing personalized necklaces in the HBO series.

And it isn’t just kids putting them together: Californian Nicole Della Santina, 33, has started more than 20 – for friends and family. She’s got three herself, plus the anklet and a watch. “I probably become addicted,” she says. Julie Phelps, 39, buys hers at J.S. Marten, and says passing them around and explaining the significance of the charms has become something of a ritual for both mothers and daughters in Carmel. “They’re really pretty awesome,” she says.

An Honor to Be Nominated
Do-it-yourself jewelry has always been a hallmark of the-too-young-to-vote set. Friendship bracelets, charm bracelets…basically anything that can bear your name. This year, Nomination bracelet is the most fashionable way to flaunt your tastes. The bracelets are somewhere between a Slinky and a watchband-stretchy, stainless-steel link, embellished with gold and enamel. But the design is individual: You pick your own links, which spell out names, wish a happy bat mitzvah, declare best-friend-forever-hood, and list activities (there is a cell phone charm for example). And because they are easy to take apart and reassemble, there’s plenty of room to change your mind, too.

Oh My Gaud
…The ability to personalize the names on the name plates on Noir belts, or to custom-order Maud’s studded “belts with a kick,” as Kaufman refers to them, makes the items “exclusive and special,” the most important words for the fashion forward Angeleno shopper. This is also evidence by the popularity of Nomination’s 18 karat gold and precious bracelet at Kitson, which the customer can personalize at $17 to $28 per symbol or letter.
